...W
W drugim
najbogatszym regionie Polski, czyli województwie dolnośląskim, PKB na 1
mieszkańca wynosi raptem 70% przeciętnej unijnej. Najbiedniejsze polskie
regiony to województwa lubelskie i podkarpackie, gdzie PKB per capita
wynosi raptem 42% średniej unijnej. Te dwa województwa równocześnie
należą do listy najbiedniejszych regionów całej UE.

Scientists for sale
Mariano A. Loza-Coll, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California: ...There are ways for researchers to sell themselves — but they shouldn't overdo it...
Universal sales principles:
- be realistic and make sure that your product fits the needs of your target audience
- a sales meeting is a conversation
- buyers need to know how they will put you, the product, to use
...Think of yourself as a new printer. Are you 'upgradable'? Your prospective employers might want to know how easily you can scale your lab up or down, or move it between floors or buildings if necessary. They may also appreciate knowing that you're ready to lecture on several subjects at a moment's notice. Do you come with a 'service contract'? Try to demonstrate that you can count on a network of collaborators in case of problems. What are your 'consumables'? If your research involves the use of unconventional materials, make sure that you show that you have thought carefully about how to secure them. Do you come with 'pre-installed drivers'? Be honest about what you need to get started. It's best to tell your department about the particle accelerator you'll need in your basement before the fleet of moving trucks arrives...

International Senior Research Fellowships
Wellcome Trust funds International Senior Research Fellowships for the most outstanding researchers, either medically or scientifically qualified, who wish to establish an independent career within an academic institution in one of the seven European countries:... Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakian Republic and Slovenia.
International Senior Research Fellowships is subject to competitive rolling scientific review every five years, and renewed awards will be funded on the basis that the Wellcome Trust and the host institution will jointly fund the International Senior Research Fellow's salary through a '50:50' partnership for the duration of any renewal period.

SCIENCE , November 27 2009, 326 (5957)
Na łamach SCIENCE , November 27 2009, 326 (5957) wiele ciekawych wypowiedzi i przemyśleń pod hasłem Science and the Stimulus.
Shovel-Ready Science Drives DOE Decisions Jeffrey Mervis:
While the Recovery Act was working its way through Congress, a handful of prominent physicists and science lobbyists compiled a list for Congress and the new Administration of all the "shovel-ready" research infrastructure projects at the Department of Energy (DOE)—those approved and ready to go out for bids. Congress used this list along with one compiled by DOE staff as a guide in deciding to give DOE's science programs $1.6 billion in the final bill. Another $400 million went to the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, a new research entity housed within the office of the energy secretary. The use of the recovery money to speed up projects already in the agency's queue is expected to pay both scientific and fiscal dividends.
NSF Boosts Success Rates, But at What Price? Jeffrey Mervis
The National Science Foundation's (NSF's) slice of the so-called stimulus bill added $3 billion to its regular $6.5 billion budget for 2009. That huge increase was based on the repeated complaint from NSF Director Arden Bement in congressional testimony that the agency received billions of dollars' worth of good research proposals each year that it couldn't fund. Bement decided to use the recovery funds to whittle down NSF's huge backlog of highly rated proposals and raise success rates. Bement also told program officers to give priority to young investigators and to "high-risk, high-reward research." But those higher success rates may not last for long, warn some science lobbyists, if Congress fails to deliver on a promised doubling of NSF's budget over 10 years.

· 68,3 % w Chinach
· 62,8 % w UE
W latach 2000 – 2005 poziom finansowania wzrósł w UE o 8%, w Chinach o 166%.
Spore wrażenie robi również porównanie zmian demograficznych w zakresie ilości badaczy:
W latach 2000 – 2005 ilość badaczy naukowych wzrósł o:
· 61% w Chinach
· 17 % w UE
· 8 % w USA i Japonii
Chińczycy to najliczniejsza grupa studentów w UE, USA i Japonii.
